How Deck & Patio Installation is Different Than Interior Lighting

How Is Deck & Patio Lighting Installation Different Than Interior Lighting?

Today, we want to cover the basics of deck and patio lighting installation. Indoor and outdoor lighting have different purposes, which necessitate different styles. Teague Electric routinely performs several indoor and outdoor lighting tasks, so let’s highlight the differences and similarities.

Deck & Patio Lighting Installation

Installing lights on the inside or outside is generally the same. The purpose and luminosity of those lights are what differ. When you decide, for example, to remodel your back patio lighting, it doesn’t make sense to use the same bulbs or fixture style you have in your bedroom.

Not every outdoor light works well indoors and vice-versa. While you can use up-and-down lighting (or landscape lighting) to create a nice outdoor ambiance, that may not work as well for your kitchen or bathroom. You can imagine the confusion of a lady trying to apply makeup with an up-and-down light in the bathroom. It would be about as helpful as pointing a flashlight upward from underneath the chin.

Indoor Lighting Objectives

Indoor lighting fulfills three general purposes: general, task, and ambiance.

  • General: These are the main, overhead lights that provide light for an entire room. Usually, this would be a medium/higher wattage LED or incandescent light.
  • Task: These are the kinds of lights that illuminate a specific area for certain household tasks. This could be something like an over-the-counter light or even a reading lamp. They isolate it to a smaller area rather than brightening the whole room.
  • Ambiance (Accent): These are the more subtle ones that light up the background. There’s some overlap between these and task lights, as they tend to target certain locations in contrast to general lighting. Sconce lighting is a good example of this.

There are a few times when outdoor lighting works well in indoor settings. When we perform commercial electrical work, a movie theater would use the big floodlights that you’d typically see outdoors.

Generally, you won’t see indoor lighting fixtures outdoors, though. However, there are some exceptions where you can make your house stand out with exterior accent lighting. This includes lots of neat things like post lights and recessed can lights.

Outdoor Lighting Objectives

The other major purposes for outdoor lighting involve security and protection. Many homes use high-wattage lights to flood the area with light if their motion detectors pick up the presence of an intruder.

Of course, when we talk about security lighting, homes actually use elements of both indoor and outdoor lighting. If you utilize certain ambiance lights along your porch and driveway, it gives the impression that someone’s awake and at home. That gives you an advantage in deterring trespassers.
